The Dubai World Cup, the final race of Dubai World Cup night, was created in 1996 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai who owns Darley Stud & Godolphin Racing, one of the world's leading Thoroughbred breeding and racing operations. Horse racing in Dubai today is an exceptionally famous game. In any case, it goes back to a couple of decades. The main horse race gathering was facilitated in 1981, at the Camel Track, by Sheikh Mohammed canister Rashid Al Maktoum. Dalham Hall Stud, which is located on the outskirts of Newmarket, Suffolk, the historic home of thoroughbred horse racing in the UK, was acquired by Sheikh Mohammed in 1981, and has since become. The inaugural running of the Dubai World Cup had a purse of $4 million in 1996. Since 2010, the race was contested for a purse of $10 million and was the world’s richest horse race until 2017. That year, the Pegasus World Cup was run at Gulfstream Park with a purse of $12 million.

DUBAI (15 January, 2021) – Racing at Meydan on Saturday is the second part of the racecourse’s first double header of the season and highlighted by a pair of 2000m handicaps, one apiece on each surface and both for horses on the cusp of Dubai World Cup Carnival.
In the Al Tayer Motors, the 2000m turf handicap, the capacity field of 14 are set to face the starter with Ahesto Bero and Recordman sharing the burden of top weight.
The former, a 5-year-old Dubawi gelding making his first start for Ismail Mohammed, having represented Simon Crisford three times last season without joy. Ahesto Bero was a dual turf winner in Europe for Andre Fabre and will be having just his ninth career start, seventh on grass.
He is the mount of Fabrice Veron who said: “We would like to think he will prove a carnival horse, so this is a good spot to get him going. He has summered well; his work has been progressive, and he seems a nice new horse for the yard.”
Meanwhile, Recordman is one of two in the race for Satish Seemar and will be ridden by Tadhg O’Shea with Richard Mullen remaining loyal to Irish Freedom on whom he won a 1400m Abu Dhabi handicap in early November, the 7-year-old’s second career win and first locally. Mullen was also aboard Recordman when he doubled his career tally with his one UAE success to date, in a 2400m Abu Dhabi handicap in December 2019.
Mullen said: “It was not an easy choice certainly because I have won on both horses, but Irish Freedom is race fit whereas Recordman has been off since running in the 2000m dirt handicap on this card last year, so will benefit from the run.”
Retained by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Jim Crowley is in UAE action for the first time this season, partnering Tafaakhor for the in-form Ali Rashid Al Rayhi. The owner’s second jockey, Dane O’Neill, partners Erwan Charpy’s Akwaan.
The 2000m dirt handicap, the Lincoln Navigator, has also attracted the maximum allowed field, in this case 16. Salem bin Ghadayer is enjoying a productive season and Royston Ffrench rides his local debutant Homespin, a homebred 4-year-old Speightstown gelding owned by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum and twice a winner, from ten starts, in Britain for Mark Johnston. Both wins were on turf whereas he was runner-up on both all-weather outings. This will be his dirt debut.
For the same owner, Xavier Ziani partners stable companion Untold Secret who has been kept busy this season and will be having his sixth start of the campaign. A 1950m Jebel Ali winner on his seasonal debut in November, the 9-year-old gelded son of Shamardal was most recently third at Jebel Ali just last Friday.

Mullen and Seemar combine with Miller’s House, a 4-year-old Munnings colt who impressed losing his maiden tag on his penultimate start, in a 1600m Meydan maiden, before failing to land a blow, but not beaten far, over 2000m at Sharjah.
Welsh Lord was impressive on his seasonal debut for Musabbeh Al Mheiri, readily landing a handicap over this 2000m dirt course and distance, defeating Meqdam who then gained revenge, seemingly outstaying him, over 2200m, also at Meydan.
Antonio Fresu was in the Welsh Lord saddle on both occasions and said: “He won well the first day, but was hanging left last time, so hopefully he makes my life easier this week!”
This is the final Meydan fixture before the eagerly awaited 2021 Dubai World Cup Carnival commences next Thursday.

Dubai World Cup History
The Dubai World Cup was first run in 1996 at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse in Dubai. Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai and owner of Godolphin Racing and Darley Stud, created the Dubai World Cup to attract the very best equine athletes from around the world for one day of top level racing.
The 9 race card is run with 8 races for thoroughbreds at various distances and one for Purebred Arabians. From 1996 until 2010 the Dubai World Cup was held at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse. Subsequently, in 2010, the race card relocated to Meydan Racecourse but all dirt races were run over a surface called Tapeta made mainly of sand, wax and rubber. In 2015, after poor participation by Americans on Tapeta, Meydan Racecourse transitioned to the dirt track they run on today.
Importantly, the winner of the inaugural running of the Dubai World Cup in 1996 was the immortal Cigar. At the time, Cigar was wildly popular among American racing fans. His race served two purposes: To introduce Cigar to an international audience and to market the Dubai World Cup as the world’s most prestigious horse race.
Dubai World Cup Purse
The inaugural running of the Dubai World Cup had a purse of $4 million in 1996. Since 2010, the race was contested for a purse of $10 million and was the world’s richest horse race until 2017. That year, the Pegasus World Cup was run at Gulfstream Park with a purse of $12 million. Last year, the Dubai World Cup increased its purse to $12 million.
In 2020, the inaugural running of the Saudi Cup had a purse of $20 million. Earlier this year, the Pegasus Invitational dropped its purse from $12 million to $3 million. The Dubai World Cup is once again the world’s second richest horse race.

Previous Dubai Winners
As we wait to see what the future holds for 2020, let’s take a look at some Dubai World Cup horses from years past who have earned top honors. Last year saw our only back-to-back winner in Godolphin based Thunder Snow who won a narrow decision over longshot Gronkowski. Previously in 2018’s running, Thunder Snow dominated his competition winning the race by 6 lengths over race favorite West Coast.
Prior to that, we saw US trainer Bob Baffert win his third Dubai World Cup with 1-9 favorite Arrogate. In one of the more exciting races you’ll ever see, typically front-running Arrogate broke at the rear of the field, raced wide and in traffic and still managed to close to dominate a star-studded field. If you have free time, download the 2017 Dubai World Cup and watch to see what an amazing champion Arrogate was.
A few other notable winners of the Dubai World Cup include:
- Cigar (1996) – Winner of the inaugural running
- Silver Charm – (1998) The first Kentucky Derby winner to win the Dubai World Cup
- Dubai Millennium – (2000) Ran the fastest Dubai World Cup at Nad Al Sheba
- Godolphin Racing – Has had the most Dubai World Cup victories for an owner (8)
- Saeed Bin Suroor – Has the most Dubai World Cup victories for a trainer (9)
- Jerry Bailey – Has the most Dubai World Cup victories for a jockey (4)

How to Watch the Dubai World Cup Without Cable?
The Dubai World Cup season is broadcast by NBC Sports in the United States, so you’re going to need to find a way to watch it all, especially if you’re a big fan of horse racing. The channel is available with pretty much all cable contracts, but it also comes with loads of streaming services, which you can enjoy online.
Over the past few years, streaming services have grown in popularity and many people are cutting the cord and going online for all their viewing needs. After all, with the popularity of video-on-demand services like Netflix and Hulu and Amazon Prime Video, it’s only natural that people would try to find a way to also watch live TV online. Thankfully, plenty of such streaming services feature the channel you need to watch the Dubai World Cup online – NBC Sports.
1. fuboTV
Overview
We’re kicking off our list with fuboTV, a platform that’s specifically marketed toward sports fans. There are four bundles you can start off with – fubo ($44.99/mo) and fubo Extra ($49.99/mo). Then, you can pile up extra channels from the packs that are available on fuboTV, or maybe even premium networks. This will push up your monthly bill, but if you get the channels you love, it’s all worth it.
On fuboTV, you’re going to find NBC Sports in the two main bundles – fubo and fubo Extra. They both feature great collections of channels so you’re going to have to figure out which one is best for you.
If you think you’re going to miss the races for whatever reason, fuboTV can be used to record them so you can watch it all later. Subscribers are offered 30 hours of cloud DVR space by default, but you can always upgrade to 500 hours by paying $9.99 per month. While you’re enjoying the race, someone else in your household can watch some other show. If you need a third simultaneous stream, you can always pay another $5.99 for it. Read TechNadu’s fuboTV review to get all the details.
2. Sling TV
Overview
Another great option is to get Sling TV, which is one of the platforms that allow loads of customization to be done, so you can get the channels you really love. There are three bundles you can start off with – Orange ($25/mo), Blue ($25/mo), and Orange + Blue ($40/mo). You can then add channel packs grouped by interest – news, kids, entertainment, and so on – as well as premium networks.
Sling TV features NBC Sports in the Blue and Orange + Blue bundles, so you can pick up whichever one you like best.
Cloud DVR space isn’t something Sling TV users get included in their subscriptions, as they have to pay another $5 per month to be able to record some 50 hours of shows. If you want to enjoy Sling TV with your family, well, you need to be careful what bundle you pick. Orange subscribers only get one stream, while Blue subscribers get three, and Orange + Blue subscribers get four. It’s pretty messed up for those who would like to get the Orange bundle, but it is what it is. Read our Sling TV review to get a better idea of what the platform has to offer.
3. Hulu
Overview
Hulu is another fabulous platform. Best known for the video-on-demand service it offers, they also added in a live TV plan that offers users access to dozens of TV channels, as well as the full VOD library for $39.99 per month. Now, you can also add a couple of extra channel packs, or premium networks, if you want more diversity.
On Hulu, you’ll find the NBC Sports channels, so you can enjoy the Dubai World Cup and much more.
Hulu subscribers of the live TV plan can record up to 50 hours of video to the cloud, but if you want more, you can always pay $14.99 per month for a total of 200 hours. While VOD customers can watch Hulu only on one device, live TV subscribers get to enjoy it on two. Plus, if you want to pay $14.99 for the Unlimited Screens feature, you can watch on any number of devices while on the home networks and three while on the go. Give our Hulu review a read before making a decision, so you have all the details.
4. YouTube TV
YouTube TV is another great option when you’re looking for a platform that comes with great perks and few complications. What we mean is that there’s only one bundle of channels on YouTube TV, so the only customization you can do comes from adding premium networks. The monthly subscription costs $40.
Among the channels offered by YouTube TV, you can find NBC Sports, as well as many other sports-oriented channels.
YouTube TV subscribers can enjoy unlimited cloud DVR, and the recordings can be kept for up to nine months. Plus, users can enjoy three simultaneous streams, which is pretty great since many platforms charge extra for that third stream. Give TechNadu’s YouTube TV review a read before making a decision.
5. DirecTV Now
DirecTV Now is another great option for those who like to customize their services to the max. two featured bundles here – Plus($50/Mo) and Max($70/Mo) – and five older bundles that used to have a different name and used to cost half of what they do now – Entertainment, Choice, Xtra, Ultimate, and Optimo Mas– you have plenty of options from the get-go. Then, you can add premium networks, as well as extra channel packs and even international bundles, if that’s what you’re looking for.
NBC Sports is present in all seven bundles, so you don’t have to worry about which one to pick – just go with your favorite. Or, if it makes more sense to you, pick the one that suits your monthly budget best.
DirecTV Now sadly has one of the worst cloud DVR features we’ve seen because you only get 20 hours. The good news is that it comes with your subscription so you don’t pay extra, but the bad news is that there’s no way to expand this in any way. The platform further allows two simultaneous streams for all users, but if you want to add a third one, you can pay $5 per month. Our DirecTV Now review will give you a lot more info on what the platform has to offer.
6. PlayStation Vue
Finally, you can get PlayStation Vue. This one got the highest score among all live TV platforms when we reviewed them thanks to all the great perks. But first things first – there are four bundles offered here, so you can pick whichever one you like best – Access ($44.99/mo), Core ($49.99/mo), Elite ($59.99/mo), and Ultra ($79.99/mo). Then, you can add a couple of channel packs grouped by interest, or even premium networks.
On PlayStation Vue, you don’t have to worry about NBC Sports because it’s present in all four bundles. Whichever one you end up going for will help you watch the Dubai World Cup.

Whether you have a cable contract that will give you access to the NBC Sports app or you’re going to go with the streaming services listed above, you have one issue to face – geoblockades. What we mean is that due to licensing issues, none of these will allow you to watch the content you want while outside the United States. Thankfully, this is an issue that’s easy to fix with the help of a VPN.
What are VPNs and How to Use Them?
VPN stands for Virtual Private Network and it’s a tool that uses encryption to help protect your online identity while making it look as if you’re in a different location than the one you’re in. The long explanation involves the VPN routing your Internet connection through its own servers and assigning you a different IP address to match the physical location of the server you picked. If you don’t have a VPN on your devices just yet, we strongly recommend considering ExpressVPN, which is one of the best we’ve encountered so far.
- The first thing you need to do to unlock your service from anywhere in the world is to make sure your VPN is installed and that you’re signed into your account, with a valid subscription. This means that you really should stick to premium tools where it counts, such as the VPN, because those free ones you find online can pose a serious risk to your security and privacy.
- Then, you have to pick a US-based server and tap “connect,” double tap the server name, or whatever process you have to follow here.
- It should only take a few seconds for the connection to be established.
- Load the streaming service site and then launch the app on your device.
- Look for NBC Sports on your channel list and make sure you know when the Dubai World Cup is on.
The Dubai World Cup is a great event to watch, not only the final race at the end of March but everything until then too. We hope we’ve been of help in getting you to watch the race online.
